History of Tucker Hill Inn
Unlike other Vermont country inns, Tucker Hill Inn was purposely built by Francis Martin as one of the first Mad River Valley lodging establishment in the late 1940's to provide rooms for visitors wanting to try the new and dangerous sport of downhill skiing at the Mad River Glen Ski resort.
As winter sports grew, a new resort came to the Mad River Valley - Sugarbush Ski Resort - which opened in 1958 enticing a more sophisticated crowd of skiers from the larger metropolitan areas, particularly now that cars were the common form of transportation. Tickets were just $4.50 a day. Imagine!
Skiing as a sport developed in popularity through the sixties with Sugarbush and Mad River Glen becoming known as one of the best ski areas in Vermont. Tucker Hill Lodge, as it was known established itself as a major area ski and summer lodge offering basic accommodation at reasonable prices for winter sports enthusiasts and those wishing to return to the beautiful unspoilt Mad River Valley in the warmer months.
In the late seventies, various renovations were undertaken to upgrade the property and Tucker Hill re-entered the world as a year-round bed and breakfast and established the renowned spring Sugarbush Triathlon from its location.
Two Famous Culinary Icons: American Flatbread and Gary Danko
In the eighties, Tucker Hill's then appetizer chef, George Schenk, introduced his own latest creation to guests: American Flatbread. Cooked in an oven built on the patio outside the Pub, the inexpensive fare provided a nice complement to the amazing fine dining offered upstairs by San Francisco's culinary icon, Gary Danko, who was fast building a solid reputation. However, a frost heave in 1992 destroyed the flatbread oven forcing George to consolidate his operations to a new location - Lareau Country Farm and the rest as they say is history!
In the late nineties, the inn was extensively renovated and refurbished and quickly nominated by Ski Magazine as its Inn of the Month.
Your Present Day Innkeepers: Phill and Alison
Owning an Inn fulfills a life-long goal for Phill and Alison Truckle. Their dream began shortly before leaving their native England when with youthful vigor they told friends that they would return in a few years after making their fortunes in America's corporate world and then buy a pub! Those few years turned into a decade or more and included homes in Massachusetts, California and Connecticut and in 2004 they purchased Tucker Hill - a New England Inn.
Phill spent his professional life in the semiconductor and technology arena in marketing and business development traveling extensively throughout U.S., Europe and Asia. Upon moving to Vermont, he sleeps with his wife every day for the first time in 20 years, and indulges in his passions for cooking, DIY and golf (occasionally!). Aside from his negative frequent flyer account, he does not miss his historic close associaton with the airlines at all.
Prior to inn ownership, Alison worked in a variety of corporate positions in Event and Project Management as well as Human Resources. Multi-tasking has always been a skill she excels in and with two children and a busy career she certainly prepared herself well for innkeeping. Making a house into a home has been her speciality over the years and at Tucker Hill she continues to create a special warmth with her own laughter and gift for color and decor.
Now a destination Inn with new standards of excellence in all areas, guest frequently comment that Tucker Hill is a "home away from home". Phill and Alison love to hear this as the Inn is such a very special place to them.
