Montpelier & Barre - 30 minute drive

Visitors are frequently surprised by how small Montpelier is despite being the State capital and home to the oldest State House in the Nation – a beautiful gold-domed building surrounded by maple trees.  Montpelier is also the home of the New England Culinary Institute (NECI) and Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks where visitors can explore how syrup really arrives on the breakfast table. Next to Montpelier is the industrial town of Barre famous for its granite mines, granite sculptures and home of the Rock of Ages – a working quarry providing an experience like no other.

A short drive on from Montpelier is the tiny town of Cabot, the home of one of Vermont’s largest cheese manufacturers.

Waterbury - 20 minute drive Ben & Jerry's

Home of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the State.  The town is also home to Green Mountain Coffee Growers, Cold Hollow Cider Mill and various Vermont outlet shops including Lake Champlain Chocolates and Cabot Cheese.

Northfield - 40 minute drive

Norwich University makes up a large part of this small town which boasts several covered bridges within ½ mile of each other.  Northfield is also home to Stave Puzzles who take jigsaw puzzles to a whole new level.   The drive to Northfield from Tucker Hill during fall foliage is spectacular over the Roxbury Gap.  Remember to ask the Innkeepers for details as it is not typically marked on area maps and is by far the shortest distance to Norwich University too from Tucker Hill.

Middlebury - 40 minute drive

A delightful college town, home of Middlebury College just over the Green Mountains offering an array of shops.

Burlington & Lake Champlain - 45 minute driveVermont Teddy Bear Factory

Taking scenic Route 17 over the “App Gap” to Burlington is one of the true pleasures of visiting Vermont during fall foliage.  The views are simply magnificent and the road ambles its way to the major metropolis of Burlington, eventually reminding the driver that there are more people in Vermont these days than cows!  Burlington itself is the home of UVM (University of Vermont), St. Michael’s College, the Shelburne Museum, Vermont Teddy Bear Factory.
